For nearly four decades, Elsworth Gallery has championed extraordinary artists whose work challenges, provokes, and redefines contemporary art.
Founded in 1987 by Margaret Elsworth in a modest Chelsea storefront, the gallery began with a singular vision: to create a space where emerging artists could present ambitious, uncompromising work to a discerning audience.
From those early days showing unknown painters from the Lower East Side, Elsworth has grown into one of New York's most respected contemporary art spaces, now occupying 12,000 square feet across three floors on West 25th Street.
Today, under the directorship of Daniel Elsworth, the gallery continues its founding mission while embracing new media, performance, and cross-disciplinary practice. We represent 28 artists from 14 countries and present 15-20 exhibitions annually.
We exist to serve artists. Every decision we make begins with the question: does this support the artist's vision and sustain their practice?
We never follow market trends. Our program is driven by curatorial conviction—presenting work we believe in, regardless of commercial pressures.
Art belongs to everyone. Free Thursday evenings, education programs, and subsidized studio spaces ensure our doors remain open to all.
We're committed to reducing our environmental impact through sustainable exhibition design, carbon-offset shipping, and renewable energy.
Our 12,000 square-foot building was designed by architect Rem Nakamura in 2003, featuring soaring 18-foot ceilings, polished concrete floors, and walls of natural light. Each floor offers a distinct character for different kinds of work.
